Props

In our project we used props which represented the type of genre and age group we were aiming for. Our teenage actors ,which were Sarah and the protagonist, were both dressed in casual clothing that teenagers usually wear. Although the protagonist in our project was dressed casually we made sure that he was dressed in all black with a hat to hide his identity. He was dressed in black jeans, black coat and a black baseball cap, all which are typical outerwear for a teenage boy. The psychologist in the film was dressed in a work suit, this shows the class divide between the teenagers and herself. It shows that as she is doing her job which is probably high paid she can afford to dress herself in nice things. The clothing also shows the differences between the ages of the characters. As the psychiatrist is wearing a suit it shows her as being more mature. While the character Sarah is wearing a hooded top and jeans which shows that she is maybe not as mature as the psychiatrist.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media project is a thriller based on teenagers. We choose this genre as we think it would appeal a lot to the age group we have chosen. When we did the research for our film we looked at films such as “From London to Brighton” “Kidulthood” and “Bullet Boy”. All of which are low budget productions.

Firstly the Mise En Scene used in our project is mainly based on the film “Kidulthood” as both this film and ours are based on the same age group. As you can see in the picture the clothes in both ore project and “Kidulthood” are extremely similar. In the scene in our project where the protagonist bumps into Sarah he is dressed in all black which shows him as being someone who doesn’t really want to be noticed and wants to look mysterious. This is also shown in “Kidulthood” as they are all dressed in tracksuits and jeans. The clothes also show the stereotype of how how a teenage boy dresses nowadays. The lighting in both our film and “Kidulthood” are also very similar. Both films contain very dark lighting which adds to the whole effect of the scene. This is also apparent in the film “From London to Brighton” which also in the beginning scene is very dark and moody.

The camera work in our project was also based on a number of scenes used in all the films we researched. Our use of over the shoulder shots in the conversation between the psychiatrist and Sarah were used to show the emotion of the characters especially Sarah’s. We also used some close ups which were also used in the opening scene on “From London to Brighton”, we wanted to use these shots as we believed they gave a better insight into what the characters emotions were.

We would like to think our opening scene is like no other film that has been made before in terms of the plot. We wanted our project to be something original and something that was quite thought provoking.
